Trend Micro – The Anti-Antivirus
If the fight against malware wasn’t already tough enough, the consumer version of Trend Micro antivirus caught an uppercut and subsequent black eye this week. A bug found by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) in the Password Manager component showed that it was possible for any webpage to take control of the computer, run scripts, remove Trend AV, and even steal encrypted passwords. The full details of the bug report are detailed here.
Lodi Dodi, It’s an F’in Xbox Party
The Xbox Live network had issues on Wednesday for an extended period of time and people weren’t happy. Most notably, rapper Snoop Dogg took to social media to voice his displeasure and dropped a few F-bombs in the process. Even Bill Gates wasn’t immune to criticism:
“[Is it] that difficult to play somebody online what the f— is you doin’ Bill Gates? Fix yo s— man.”

IoT? – More Like The Internet of (Unsecured) Things
As the Internet of Things continues to grow, security has to be a #1 priority. Unfortunately, as more companies get into producing devices at bargain prices I believe we are going to see lots of scary things happen.
A family in Washington added a wifi capable baby video monitor to their toddler’s bedroom only to hear strange voices coming from it one night. They found that a man was remotely controlling the night vision camera and speaking to their child at night.
Ring offers a doorbell that has an integrated camera. Someone rings your doorbell, you check an app to view who it is. Through the app you can automatically unlock the door for family, run to meet your best friend, or dodge the fourth door-to-door salesman this week. What you can also do is remove a couple of screws, push a button, connect your phone and view the home’s wifi SSID and password in PLAIN TEXT!
Seriously, deploy all of the things but be security aware people!
And One!
